Content materials on Continents and Oceans for grade V

Why I have chosen PowerPoint as my teaching-learning materials.

Now, let me introduce you all to my creation of materials. For my creation of materials, I have used PowerPoint for teaching and learning. Microsoft PowerPoint is powerful presentation software that has changed the way people present ideas and information to an audience. With just a few clicks and keystrokes, you can add graphics, text, audio, video, and animation to a slide show. In the classroom, PowerPoint's ability to integrate sound, animation, and video in a slide show can capture the attention of media and video-savvy students. Text in a PowerPoint is easier to read than notes jotted on a blackboard. Teachers can have greater flexibility in presenting lessons, which can be used repeatedly and modified as needed to different classes.

In specific the instructions for creating content based materials are as follows:

Ø Firstly with proper planning and looking for an advantage I have chosen PowerPoint as my ICT tools for designing my materials.

Ø Depending upon my topic continent and continents, I have downloaded some images to make my slides attractive.

Ø Secondly before entering into the designing of a presentation I make some notes to keep myself on a track that will help me to do a presentation systematically.

Ø  On completion of PowerPoint I carefully glance through the slides whether the slides were in order or not as well as the information.

 When to use?

ü  During the introduction of lesson development on the continent and oceans (definition, what are 7 continents).

ü While doing the activity (when they do the activity if they got stuck they can refer the slides)

ü During summarizing the lesson (by referring to the slides that have shown earlier and glancing once again).

How to use?

Firstly to introduce my lesson development on my topic continents and oceans, I will use the slide which presents the definition, what are seven continents and oceans. Secondly, if they got stuck while doing an activity teacher will show the slides again to the whole class. Lastly, in order to check their understanding of the particular topic continents and oceans, we will glance at the slides in the form of summary type and ask some questions based on the topic.

Content materials on Introducing Rates for class VI

The content based materials I have designed is for grade six. The topic is introducing rates from Mathematics subject. The main objectives of the materials are to let students compare rates and describe rate in more than one way correctly. The tool I have used this time is Camtasia. Camtasia is powerful video editing software, which supports most video media formats and presents an easy to use demonstration and education video platform. Apart from recording first-rate videos and audios, Camtasia is good for video editing and very easy to learn for the beginner.

How did I create the materials?

First of all I planned to prepare a PowerPoint presentation about solar system and then only I can screen record using Camtasia. I have designed a black background then, inserted a rectangle and added green coloured on it and adjusted in centre. This background is used all across the slides. I have used entrance animation (wipe) to introduce the topic in the first slide and followed by fade animation to display the objectives of lesson in second slide. For the following slides, I have used simple and several animations like appear, fade, disappear, wipe in order to guide the students properly and not to distract them. I have also inserted pictures downloaded from internet to support the concept and make it interesting and understandable. Not only this, I have also utilized shapes especially the transparent and red outlined circle to highlight the important points. In the second last slide I have summarized the lesson in graphic organizer (mind-mapping) using oval shapes and arrow because graphic organizer help students to remember for long time as well as it is interesting to learn in visual form.

After the presentation is completed, I opened the Camtasia Studio 8.2 version and selected record the screen option and started recording. I explained the concepts as if I were teaching in the real classroom. I saved the recording after it is done and automatically it took me back to Camtasia. Then, I started editing by using tool such as cut, split, transition, zoom-n-pan options. After that, I saved the video from produce and share option by selecting the MP4 with video player (up to 720p) because it will give the best version of graphic compare to other option.

When should the materials be used?

The materials can be used during lesson development and lesson closure. The video can suffice as information input under lesson development in teaching the concepts to students because all the information are clearly explained with voice narration. Whilst the teacher can pause the video when it reaches to calculation part because students will be confused if the video is played continuous without getting the concept. We can also pause the video after all the concepts are explained to carry out the activity. The teacher can also use the summary part from the video during lesson closure because through graphic organizer students will be interested as well as teacher can help students to recapitulate the lesson learned. One by one ask students what it meant by and elaborate on their responses.

Activity instructions:

1)      The activity will be done individually.

2)      You will be provided with a worksheet.

3)      Read the questions carefully.

4)      Write the answer in the space provided.

5)      For this activity, ten minutes will be given.

Content based materials on Solar System for grade V

The content based materials I have designed is for grade five. The topic is Solar System from Social Studies subject. The main objective of the materials is to let students identify and tell the names of eight planets correctly. The tool I have used are Microsoft PowerPoint and video. Like I mentioned in my previous blog, video helps the learners to learn at their pace and appealing to all levels of learners. I have inserted my voice across the slides which aids auditory learner to learn better.

How did I create the materials?

First of all, I have created sun using round shape and used gradient red colour to look more fascinating. I have also designed the eight planets using round shape and different gradient colours. For Saturn and Uranus rings, I have used block arc shape and off axis 1 top option from shape effects under 3-D rotation. I used white oval shape with transparent applied to it in order to make orbit.

In the first slide I have used entrance (bounce) animation for sun and eight planets and even added wipe animation for the text to introduce the lesson topic. Next slide consists of objectives that the students should fulfill by the end of the lesson. Third slide mainly talks about components of solar system in which firstly, I have shown the picture of solar system. I have downloaded relevant images of comets and asteroids from the google, inserted and arranged with planets. One by one I displayed the word, then used transparent and red outlined oval shape to emphasized the picture. Here, I used entrance animations (appear and disappear) to grab attention and to say that it is important. After that, I also used emphasis (underline) animation to reiterate important concepts.

In fourth slide, I have inserted orbit and eight planets along with sun. Then, in a sequential manner I have applied entrance (fade) animation for both image and text. After that when all the images and text are presented, the text will zoom out as I have used emphasize (grow/shrink). In fifth slide, I simply duplicated the fourth slide and erased the text and then made the planets to revolve around the sun by using motion (circle) animation. It will go on and on revolving until the next slide and in this slide I have explained the concept of gravity using simple animation with the text. In second last slide, I have recollected the lesson learned through mind mapping. This is done in order for students to remember for a longer period of time. I have inserted a transparent white circle shape and a line. I duplicated the line into seven lines and drew a concept map. While drawing the concept map I inserted the planets on one end of the line and let the text come out when I click. I used entrance (fade) animation for the text. I ended up my lesson with a thank you note and then converted the PowerPoint into video.

When should the materials be used?

The materials can be used in lesson development and lesson closure. It can be also used before teaching in the class by letting the students to watch the video at home and come. Further, the teacher can draw ideas from students and if more information input is required then, teacher can do so accordingly. Teacher can also respond to the student doubts if they have any. Now, when it comes to usage of material in lesson development, teacher can simply play the video and let the students watch the video. This is because everything is explained through voice narration. It can be used at lesson closure because I have made a concept map about solar system and it is mainly for students to recollect what they have learnt.

Word search instructions:

1)      This activity will be done individually.

2)      Everyone will be provided with a word search sheet.

3)      Read the words given in a box carefully and circle all the word.

4)      You all will be given 5 minutes to complete the activity.

Content based materials on vegetables for Class PP

This time I am here with my new material for grade PP. The subject I have chosen is English and the topic is “Vegetables”. The main objective is to let the students identify and tell the name of the vegetables correctly. Here, the bonus point is students have already learned about the name of the colours and numbers and in this topic also, students will be introduced to the name of the vegetables along with few name of colours and numbers. I have used Microsoft PowerPoint and video as a tool to design the content based materials. The main reason behind converting PowerPoint into video is, it appeal to all levels of learners and the learning style. It provide student to learn at their pace and opportunity for self-study. Students can pause the video and take a break when required but in PowerPoint presentation there is no option for pause because it goes on and on and it will be exhausting and boring. Thus, video serve a multi- purposes and a great tool for effective learning.

I have downloaded relevant and animated pictures from the internet in order to provide a better picture of the concept because children love animated pictures whilst they can retain the information for longer duration. The animated pictures I have downloaded are catchy and interesting to the eyes of young children. I have inserted my voice in every slides because it will guide the students while watching and help them to identify and tell the name of the vegetables correctly. Moreover, I have used simple and different animations in order to arouse curiosity in children and avoid distractions.

How did I create the materials?

In the first slide, I have inserted a gif of vegetables dancing in the air and I let the students to guess what they are going to learn. Through this it will build curiosity in students. Then, the vegetables word will pop out slowly along with my voice. I have used entrance animation (wipe) for the word to pop out and even set the time precisely with my voice. In second slide, I have inserted animated pictures of six different vegetables and added emphasis animation (grow/shrink) in each picture. Here, I will also use the concept of number to count the vegetables that they are going to learn and I have also fixed the time exactly with my voice.

For slide three till eight, firstly I have shown the picture of vegetable and let the students guess the name of the vegetables. I have utilized different emphasis animations (peek in, float, float in, bounce, fade, grown & turn) for the vegetable to pop out. After that, a sentence will come out describing the name of the vegetable and followed by second sentence with its shape and colour. I have used entrance animation (wipe) and adjusted the time exactly with my voice. In ninth slide, I have presented the importance of eating vegetables in which it is essential for students to know the reason behind eating vegetables in their everyday life. Here also I have applied entrance animation (wipe and appear) for sentence and pictures accordingly with my voice.

From slide ten till thirteen it mainly focused on the activity. I have designed an activity based upon the game named “Who am I?” in which the students will be actively participating because firstly I have given them a clue in which I read the sentence. Then, I provided them with a think time of five seconds but in real classroom teacher can provide 1 minute for think time by pausing the video. Only after that, the picture of the vegetable along with the name will pop out. Like I mentioned before I have used entrance and emphasis animations (fade, blink, zoom and wipe). We all know that it is crucial to sum up the lesson to help students recapitulate and I did in the fourteen slide. One by one I showcased the picture along with the name of the vegetable by using entrance animation (fade). In the second last slide, I gave them homework in order to ensure their learning and ended my presentation with a thank you note. Then, I saved the ppt file and converted into video.

When should the materials be used?

The materials can be used in lesson development, learning activity and even in lesson closure. In lesson development, all the six different vegetables name will be explained though my narration. I have designed an activity in the form of game where by students love when they hear the word game and I ensure that this will captivate their attention and engage them productively. Not to forget, the questions are framed based upon the previous slides presented or related to the name of six vegetables. The materials can be used in lesson closure because I have a slide where it will recapitulate the name of vegetables along with the pictures.

Game instructions:

  1. You all will be grouped into 4 groups of 4 members.
  2. Firstly, I will read the questions and after that you will read by yourself.
  3. Then, discuss with your group members.
  4. Whoever group knows the answer can raise their white flag.
  5. If the group gives the wrong answer, it will be passing over to other group raising their white flag.
  6. For each question you will get 1 minute in which I will pause the video.
  7. The group with highest correct answers will be awarded prizes.

Content materials about moving shapes for Class III

I have designed a content based material for grade level three on the subject Mathematics. The topic I have chosen is “Moving Shapes” under chapter five Geometry. The reason behind choosing this topic is I found it suitable to teach with the integration of ICT in my classroom because 2-D shapes are those shapes that we cannot touch or feel but we can simply see it. Keeping that in mind I can teach through representation in pictures and video form. The main objective is to let students identify and describe the movement of 2-D shapes as slide, turn and flip. I have chosen Microsoft PowerPoint as a tool to design the content based materials because it is an easy program to use and a powerful tool for giving a presentation. It is also one of the ways to captivate audience through use of pictures, video and animations.

How did I create the materials?

In my first slide, I have designed a black background and then, inserted different 2-D shapes with different colours. After that, I have used various animations like spin, basic swivel, float in and fly in to make my presentation presentable. In next slide, I typed the title “how can we move shape”. I inserted three different shapes with different colours and added animations like line motion, appear, spin and disappear. Then, inserted three textboxes and wrote the names of movement like sliding, flip, and turn. After that I arrange the shapes and textboxes together and accordingly. I made in such a way that first the shape will appear and then only text because it will build curiosity in children whilst provide opportunities for teachers to draw ideas when pictures pop out without any wording.

In third and fourth slides, it have sliding concept and its example in which for the concept slide, I have labelled shapes and for one shape I used the animation line motion to explain sliding. I have inserted a textbox which explain the concept of sliding and applied appear animation. For example slide also I have applied the same animation. In next slide I have turn concept and its example where by, I have downloaded the picture of clock to show the direction of turn. Here also, I have used animations like appear and wedge. After these two slides, it is about flipping, flip line and examples where by explain the concept using picture along with text. In flip line slide, I have given two examples using two different shapes. I have designed a quiz and it includes slides ten till twenty eight. I have used the hyperlink and I have also used the applause sound for the correct answer in the quiz to encourage and reinforce them and wrong buzzer for incorrect answer to give warning.

When should the materials be used?

The materials can be used in lesson development and in learning activity. The reason is, in lesson development, the information input is addressed and the materials will aids and suffice the information input where by the teacher can teach the meaning of the concept along with examples  from the slides. It can be also used in learning activity and specifically for the quiz part because the learning activity is in quiz form. The quiz is developed based upon the concept included from the previous slides that the students have already learnt. The main focus of conducting quiz is to assess the students learning.

Quiz instructions:

  1. You all will be grouped into 3 groups of 3 members according to your roll numbers.
  2. There are six questions in total.
  3. Each group will get an opportunity to choose two questions.
  4. If a group is not able to answer the question, it will be pass to other group.
  5. For every correct answer, you will be awarded 4 points.
  6. If you answer the pass question, your group will be awarded 2 points.
  7. For each question, you will be given 1 minute.
  8. The group with highest point will be the winner and will be awarded 5 points in CA.

Self-Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Nima Tshering and I am 21 years old. My village is at Phongmey under Trashigang Dzongkhag. I was brought up in Trashiyangtse because my father was working as a cook in school. I graduated my middle school from Tsenkharla Central School and high school from Baylling Central School. Currently I am pursuing Bachelor Degree of Education in Primary at Paro in final semester this year. I am the youngest among the five siblings.

I like watching animated movies, listening trendy music of western and Bhutanese, playing table tennis and travelling. Some of the best animated movies I have watched so far are Raya and the lost dragon, demon slayer series, Coco, Moana, Kungfu panda, Kubo and the two strings and the list go on. Some of the trendy music I liked are dynamite, bhu nge sem, memories, shing ghe lhamo, ya taru ma taru and so on. I love playing table table since young age as the games room at school was near my house. I would daily go there and play which eventually helped me to develop interest toward the game.

I am introvert at first but once you know about me, we can be a good friends. I like hanging out with friends and family because I believe we should make memories and have good time with the people we love while we are still alive. I also love to travel to the new places and last year I went to Tsirang for the first time with my brother and sister in law. The good thing about travelling in new places is I get to explore the site, people, food and culture.

As this is the first time creating a blog, exploring and posting, I kind of feel excited and happy. I really hope someday when I am in real teaching field, I would create my own blog and post about my teaching or my daily activities on daily basis. Not for the intention of earning or boasting about myself but for the hope that it might benefit some people from my blog. Many people are upcoming with many blogs to advocate people, connect with other world and to share their lively experiences with other people.

Life is full of ups and downs and I have realized that people were not badmouthing but simply it was the fact because without these we can't face the reality. The reality is hard but we have to accept it and I have experienced a lot during last couple of  decades. There was a time where I lost some good souls and other time where I met with some good souls. I have also learned that life is good but it can be better by being perseverance, hardwork, pure intention and diligent.

Happy Reading!
